Please note: Any licensed allied health professional that assists in the perioperative care and rehabilitation of spine surgery patients should attend including, but not limited to, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Physical and Occupational Therapists/Assistants, Athletic Trainers. Family/internal Medicine Physicians and Chiropractors may also benefit from this course.
Course Chairmen:
Michael Reed, DPT, OCS, MTC is a physical/ occupational therapist. He is certified as a specialist in Orthopedics and in Manual Therapy. In 2002, he earned his Clinical Doctorate in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine. Dr. Reed lectures nationally and internationally on disorders of the spine and has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. He is the founder of the Palm Beach Spine Foundation and acts as a spine therapy consultant to the Florida Marlins Professional Baseball Organization.
George England is a consultant for both surgeons and scrub nurses. Under the guidance of surgeons, Mr. England has received skills training for devices and the materials utilized during spine surgeries and procedures such as kyphoplasty, spinal fusion, discectomies, vertebral fractures and artificial disc replacements. He has received training in OSHA bloodborne pathogen protocol, sterile technique and OR protocol. Mr. England has even developed his own artificial disc.
Course Description:
This two-day course provides the latest information regarding advances in spine surgery. It is designed to provide an understanding of the implications of new techniques to allied health professionals, as they consider the perioperative care process. This course will examine surgical interventions presented per procedure and address indications for the procedure, the surgical approach used, a description/ illustration of the procedure and special considerations.
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify elements of spine surgery as they relate to past, present and future.
- Describe how appropriate interdisciplinary coordination enhances spine surgical outcomes.
- Name important elements of anatomy and physiology as related to spine surgery and the healing process.
- Determine appropriate spine-specific perioperative evaluation techniques.
- Identify the indications for a variety of spine surgery procedures.
- Name surgical approaches for a variety of spine procedures.
- Describe surgical procedure for a variety of spine interventions.
- Identify special considerations for a variety of spine surgery interventions.

This course is approved in Florida under Title Spine Surgery Technology Update: Implications for Medical and Rehabilitation Providers. If attendees are using FL approval, they can be provided with separate attendance record approved by the Florida Physical Therapy Association for 16.5 continuing education hours using the following approval number: CE80211968.
Occupational Therapists - 14 Contact Hours (50-7130)
These hours are recognized by the Florida Board of Nursing and the Florida Board of Occupational Therapy.
Athletic Trainers – 14 CEU’s 
SOS is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc., to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers. Participants must attend the full course along with completion of post-course testing and evaluation in order to receive full CEU attendance recognition. This courses level of difficulty for Athletic Trainers is advanced.
Orthopedic Physicians Assistants – can receive credit through the NATA BOC approval.
