NASS Research Funds: Supporting Spine Research
To support cutting edge spine research, NASS established and manages two funds:
Annual Research Fund
The Annual Research Fund (ARF) collects money to support research projects each year from applications selected by NASS' Research Project Management Committee. Typically, $180K - $200K is distributed annually in support of research grants and fellowships. The Annual Research Fund has been an effective vehicle for supporting basic and applied clinical science since 1989. Although NASS has received increased numbers of quality applications in recent years, it has been unable to fund all of the applications with merit. Please make a donation today!
Spine Research Endowment Fund
To ensure future funding, the Spine Research Endowment Fund (SREF) was established in 1996. As an endowment, the principal remains untouched. Once the fund reaches $2 million, the interest income accrued each year on the principal will supplement the amount through the the Annual Research fund, essentially doubling the average amount that NASS distributes each year.
Named Funds
In addition to ARF and SREF, any individual or group (non-corporate) making a contribution of $25,000 or more has the opportunity to name a particular research fund after any individual. Send an e-mail through our contact form to receive more information.

Contributions may also be made through the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF). Spine care professionals who contribute through OREF can designate a portion of their gifts to NASS. OREF Donors are Partners in Spine. This cooperative effort affords NASS members two benefits: (1) the convenience of supporting two outstanding research funding organizations, and (2) the public recognition from both NASS and OREF.
