New Vertebral Fractures Guidelines and Appropriate Use Criteria Released

This week, NASS released two sets of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and appropriate use criteria (AUCs) related to vertebral fractures—one addressing osteoporotic vertebral fractures and another focusing on neoplastic vertebral fractures. These resources help spine providers make evidence-based decisions for the diagnosis and management of these conditions.

NASS Annual Meeting attendees are invited to visit the NASS Resource Center to explore these new guidelines firsthand, along with the entirety of the all-new NASS Digital Library. In addition to these critical clinical tools, attendees can also view the 2024 edition of Common Coding Scenarios, preview Roadmap to Innovation – a guide to aid inventors in bringing a spine product to market, and the 2024 SpineLine issues.

Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures

The osteoporotic guidelines provide a comprehensive framework to address the growing challenge of managing vertebral fractures caused by osteoporosis. The CPG provides recommendations on managing pain, improving mobility, and preventing further fractures through various therapeutic strategies. The AUC for osteoporotic vertebral fractures emphasizes appropriate diagnostic methods and treatment pathways, ensuring that practitioners deliver care that aligns with the latest research.

Neoplastic Vertebral Fractures

For neoplastic vertebral fractures, the CPG and AUC offer an in-depth analysis of treatment protocols, including when to prioritize surgery versus nonsurgical approaches. These guidelines are crucial for spine care specialists managing cancer-related vertebral fractures, emphasizing a patient-centered approach that considers both oncologic and orthopedic factors.

These new releases show NASS's commitment to advancing spine care through research and clinical excellence. For those attending NASS 2024 in Chicago, visiting the Resource Center offers a unique opportunity to explore NASS’s leading-edge materials and ensure their clinical practices are in line with the latest standards in spine care.
