Journal CME: Application of deformity principles in the management of spinal neoplasms: A Primer

As advancements in surgical, systemic, and radiotherapeutic treatments continue to improve survival and quality of life in patients with spinal tumors, the impact of spinal deformity in this population remains underappreciated and understudied. This review explores the complex relationship between oncologic spine disease and spinal alignment, examining factors such as bone quality, instrumentation challenges, and the implications of residual deformity on patient outcomes. Special attention is given to the evolving role of novel biomaterials like carbon fiber-reinforced implants, the effects of radiotherapy on surgical planning, and the need for thoughtful reconstruction strategies. As survival rates rise, optimizing spinal alignment is increasingly essential for enhancing patient function and long-term well-being.
