Did you know the North American Spine Society has its own bio-skills lab and conference center just outside of Chicago – the Specialty Education and Research Center (SERC)? SERC provides a professional environment for product development, research and continuing education. The space hosts a wide variety of companies and associations demonstrating procedures, and not just for spine. From maxillofacial to feet and ankle, SERC has the ability to conduct any type of lab.
The building boasts a 3,800-square foot bio-skills lab with 10-12 fully equipped workstations, six C-Arms, ceiling-mounted LCD displays amid the stations and multiple cameras to enhance learning. A tiered, high-tech auditorium accommodates more than 100 and includes two projection screens and an automatic camera tracking system to record audio, video and PowerPoint presentations that can be distributed to participants after your event. Additionally, a multipurpose room is available for breakout sessions and food functions; behind the scenes are a preparation room and locker rooms, as well as cadaver storage.
SERC has continued to stay up and running (and busy!) throughout the pandemic. In 2021, SERC has hosted 38 labs. As one might imagine the biggest change has been in the size and the timing of those labs. Our flexibility has proven key as many of the labs are now hosted in the evenings.
