NASS Committee Highlight: Research Funding Committee
Since its inception in 1985, NASS has funded over $4.4 million in multidisciplinary spine research. In 2022, NASS awarded $167,840 in funds:
Each year, NASS accepts applications in the following categories:
- Research Grants (Basic, Clinical or Translational)
- Young Investigator Grants (Basic, Clinical or Translational)
- Nontraditional, Nonsurgical Treatment Grants
- Clinical or Research Traveling Fellowships
NASS’ Research Funding Committee members are responsible for grading letters of proposal, invited grant applications, and fellowship applications to send for review and approval by NASS’ Evidence Analysis & Research Council and Executive Committee. Grading is based on scientific merit, significance of the project, approach and feasibility.

About the Committee: Oversees research grant and fellowship applications, processes and suggests funding recommendations to the Evidence Analysis & Research Council and Board.
- Chair: Richard L. Skolasky, Jr., Sc.D.
- Vice Chair: Zorica Buser, PhD, MBA
- Eligibility: Successful completion of NASS Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Training Program required within one year of committee appointment
- Estimated Time Requirements:
- Grading of Letters of Proposal (One month to committee)
- Grading of Full Applications (One month to committee)
- 1-2 mandatory virtual meetings per year
- Current Term Accepting Applications: 2023-2026
- Number of Current Members: 11
