This March, NASS Advocacy restarted its 2021 NASS Updates from the Hill series, which includes virtual discussions with physician lawmakers in Congress and federal spine care champions. Moderated by NASS leaders, these exclusive webinars are designed to provide our membership with first hand insight into the policies and priorities shaping the debate over spine care on Capitol Hill.
Over the past four months, we were pleased to join in conversation with three of the 17 physician lawmakers currently serving in Congress. In March, U.S. Representative Kim Schrier, MD (WA-08), a pediatrician, joined with NASS Advocacy Council Chair Philip Schneider, MD and NASS Legislative Committee Chair Alan Brown. This April, U.S. Representative Larry Bucshon, MD (IN-08), a thoracic surgeon, spoke with NASS President Eeric Truumees, MD and NASS Political Engagement Committee Member Josiah Orina, MD, FAAS. Most recently, U.S. Representative Brad Wenstrup, DPM (OH-02), a podiatric surgeon, joined with NASS Second Vice-President John Finkenberg, MD and NASS Legislative Committee Member Michael Steinmetz, MD.
Throughout the series, Congressional speakers and NASS leaders have examined emerging political landscapes on Capitol Hill—and their impact on the legislation that seeks to address issues consequential to the spine profession—including prior authorization, Medicare reimbursement, medical liability reform, telemedicine, and more.
