We recently asked 2026 DFNS inductees to share reflections on their career, the evolution of spine care, and advice for fellow professionals. Below are Dr. Clifford’s answers:

What is a lesson you learned early in your career that you still carry with you today?

Early in my career, I learned that the best clinical decisions come from combining the best available evidence with patient values and clinical expertise. That principle continues to guide my approach to delivering efficient, high-quality, patient-centered spine care.

Tell us about one of your mentors and the best piece of advice they gave you.

A former chair of the Exercise Committee once shared advice that has stayed with me: plant the seed of thought. Rather than trying to change minds all at once, make a thoughtful observation, challenge the status quo with a simple question or statement, and invite productive debate. I've found that meaningful, lasting change often begins with a single conversation.

How has your involvement with NASS influenced your professional growth or career journey?

My involvement with NASS has connected me with a collaborative community dedicated to advancing evidence-informed spine care. Over the past 10 years, it has broadened my perspective, fostered meaningful professional relationships, and reinforced my commitment to advancing value-based care by improving clinical efficiency while enhancing the patient experience.
